[HANDS-ON REVIEW]

What makes Ref. 1601 different from other DJs

The definition of uniqueness: its mechanics and authentic features

Reference 1601 is an early model for Rolex Datejust that comes with a Caliber 1570 automatic movement so called a 'Tank'. Caliber 1507 is a non-quickset movement, which means it's mechanically stable and durable. This movement should not be underestimated as it's the most solid and durable house work movement ever made by Rolex. The popularity of 1601 has been rising for recent years. There is a number of collectors who prefer Ref. '1601' rather than '16014' in this respect. I think their preference towards '1601' will keep widening and deepening for a long time. Surely I am one of them and have recently added this historically privileged timepiece to my collection.

Rolex Datejust has so many variations in its dial. This watch comes with plain hands and numerals without tritium. These features make the watch look neat and they function to avoid corrosion. A dial disc is designed to be layered. This style is so called 'pie pan'; one of the main factors that I like about this model. When I first got the watch, I was so amazed at its great condition. Every part of the watch was in an excellent state of preservation. One of the iconic features, a Jubilee bracelet is also not that much stretched.

'shell clasp'

A non-quickset movement reflects simplicity in its mechanism which leaves less possibility of dysfunction. This is why so many collectors' preference has been slightly shifting to Ref. 1601. What makes this watch more collectible and valuable is not because of its retail price but because of its uniqueness and historical privilege. In this respect, my satisfaction of this watch is even bigger than that of my previous collection; Ref. 16013 and Ref. 16233.

If you are a Rolex DJ enthusiast, you can find some difference on the dial, especially on its font. The 'J' in 'DATEJUST' is not crossed as it is in most Datejust watches. When I noticed it for the first time, I thought the dial has been refinished. However, one of the most skillful experts in dial refinishing told me that the dial is 100% authentic and has never been refinished. It's a fact that Rolex has been known for having a slight variance in dial font.

'lying on my wrist'

What makes vintage Rolex distinguishable from the contemporary models is this kind of little details not found in the contemporary ones, such as the layered dial referred to as 'pie pan' which you can only find on Ref. 1601 model. This kind of features not found among contemporary models is a crucial factor for valuable timepieces.
