단면이 아닌 양면으로 구성되어 상황에 맞게 다이얼 스위칭이 가능한 시계를 리버서블 워치(Reversible Watch)라고 합니다. 이런 리버서블 기능을 포함하고 있는 대표적인 시계로는 예거 르쿨트르(Jaeger Lecoultre)사의 리베르소(Reverso)가 있는데요. 까르띠에의 바스큘란트(Basculant)는 리베르소와 함께 대표적인 리버서블 워치로 그 위치를 굳건히 지키고 있습니다. 

리베르소와는 차별 되는 독특한 메커니즘의 리버서블 구동 방식 그리고 까르띠에 탱크(Tank) 고유의 디자인을 느낄 수 있다는 점에서 분명 매력적인 시계임에는 틀림없습니다.  외부 케이스와 다이얼이 포함된 내부 케이스 사이에 얇은 프레임이 위치하여 다이얼의 360도 회전을 가능케합니다. 탁상 시계처럼 세울수도 있으니, 이점 또한 소소한 재미라 생각되네요.

이와 같은 '리버서블 워치'의 탄생 배경은 과거 폴로 경기에서 유래됩니다. 스포츠를 즐기는 동안 예상치 못한 충격으로부터 시계를 보호하기 위해 제작되었는데요. 선수 들은 경기에 들어설 때마다 다이얼을 뒤집어 시계를 보호했고, 경기가 끝나면 다시 본래 다이얼로 되돌리곤 했습니다. 탄생의 시발점은 스포츠 워치였지만, 현재는 리버서블이라는 유니크함은 그대로 유지되면서 사각 시계가 주는 클래식이 더해져 드레스워치로서 더욱 견고한 명성을 유지하고 있습니다.

'탱크 솔로와 나란히'

2000년도에 탱크(Tank) 라인으로 리메이크된 바스큘라트(Basculante)는 현재는 단종되어 쉽게 구하기 어려운 모델이 되었습니다. 피게 무브먼트를 사용한 기계식과 쿼츠로 분류되는데요, 필자가 보유한 모델은 쿼츠 구동 방식입니다. 미디움 사이즈인 이 모델의 사이즈는 33mm X 24mm이며, 두께는 5.9mm로 드레스 워치로써는 최적의 사이즈라 생각됩니다.

Here is a timepiece that can exactly switch its character like we do. It is referred to as 'reversible watch'. The history of the watch dates back to 1931. People needed to find a specific way to protect their watches during polo sports. There are two brands which have been representing 'reversible watch' for about 100 years : the Cartier's 'Basculante' and Jaeger lecoultre's 'Reverso'. 

What makes different this watch from the 'Reverso' is the flipping mechanism. The Basculante has 4 axes compared to Reverso which has only 2 axes. More axes make the watch more dynamic and flexible while I try to switch the watch dial. This watch can stand like a clock; one of the attractive points of the watch. The watch is on the line of Tank. In this respect, you can experience the exquisite and iconic design of the 'Tank' from this watch. 

The watch comes with a blue sapphire crown and Roman numeral markers both of which are Cartier's iconic elements. Basculante Ref. 2405, the size of the watch is relatively small compared to the modern Cartier watches. The heart of the watch is quartz movement in which some watch lovers refer as a soulless watch. 

I love Cartier watches. The number of people who consider Cartier as luxury watch brand rather than jewelry brand has been dramatically increasing for the past few years regardless of their gender.
