최근 슈퍼세빌을 향한 저의 열정이 라도 데이마스터로 그대로 전이되어버렸습니다. 롤렉스 프레지던트의 오마주 모델인 슈퍼세빌은 지난 몇 년간 저의 빈티지 시계 콜렉팅에 있어선 앙금 없는 찐빵과도 같은 존재였는데요. 슈퍼세빌을 수집하며, 뭔가 채워지지 않는 소유욕을 계속 경험하곤 했습니다. 꼬리표처럼 따라다니는 '오마주'라는 수식어 앞에 분명 뭔지 모를 부족함을 느꼈던 것이 아닌가 싶습니다. 

시계를 좋아하는 이들이야 '대리만족'이라는 타이틀 아래 보호받지만서도, 실제로 손목 위 시계를 보고 '그거 롤렉스야'라는 물음을 받는다면 아주 미미하게 나마 이유 모를 민망함을 경험할 수도 있습니다. 워낙 아이코닉한 디자인인지라 시계를 모르는 이들에겐 '오마주'가 아닌 자칫 '이미테이션'으로 치부되어 버리는 슬픈 현실을 맞이할 수도 있는 것이 사실인데요.

이런저런 사유로, 슈퍼세빌에 대한 애착이 누구보다 남달랐던 필자는 더이상 슈퍼세빌을 수집하지 않기로 했습니다. 그러면서 눈을 돌린 것이 바로 라도사의 데이마스터(Daymaster) 모델입니다. 브랜드의 아이덴티티는 뚜렷하게 유지하면서도, 필자를 슈퍼세빌에 빠지게 만들었던 가장 큰 이유인 곡선형 요일창(Curved-day window)은 그대로 다이얼에 남아 있습니다. 

라도 빈티지 모델 중 오토매틱 모델에만 있는 로테이팅 앵커(Rotating anchor) (수동 모델은 닻 로고가 고정되어 있는 재밌는 사실)와 볼드한 인덱스 그리고 도피네(Dauphine) 핸즈까지. 저의 심장에 크로스 어퍼컷을 마구 날리며 필자를 행복한 그로기 상태로 몰고갑니다.

그렇게 구매하여 현재 소유하고 있는 모델이 바로 데이마스터 두 점과 그린홀스(Green Horse) 한 점입니다. 이 중 가장 최근에 들인 녀석이 바로 블랙 다이얼의 데이마스터입니다. 슈퍼세빌에서 데이마스터로의 취향 전이와 동시에 블루에서 블랙 다이얼로의 전이도 함께 일어나버렸습니다. 최근 블랙 다이얼이 주는 묵직함과 고급스러움을 알게되어 많은 매력을 느끼고 있는 중입니다. 패턴과 스티치 컬러가 매력적인 진녹색의 엘리게이터 스트랩은 블랙 다이얼이 주는 중후함을 상쇄시키는 감미로운 역할을 톡톡히 해내고 있습니다.

I have a tendency collecting more than one piece of watch for same model. For this reason, I have bought more than 10 super sevilles of Bulova for many years. Recently, my penchant and affection for the super seville have shifted to Rado's daymater which has various factors catching my eyes and blowing mind.  

It is obvious that I really like curved-day window feature when it comes to vintage watches. This is the reason why I have been collecting so many super sevilles for many years. However, there has always been lack of satisfaction resulting from its roots, which means it is a homage for Rolex president. The word 'homage' will always follow super seville. In this respect, I have tried to find another timepiece which has a curved-day window on its dial.

My alternative is this one : Rado's Daymaster which has a lovely dial with various elements. Bold and arrow-shaped hour numeral markers are elegant and descent. My one of favorites, mentioned above, the curved-day window at six o'clock is the most distinctive feature of the watch. The Bulova super sevilles originating from Rolex President, also have curved-day window on its dial, while the Rado's daymaster has the same feature keeping its own identity.

I had bought this lovely timepiece at relatively sensible prices. Sure, the condition of the watch was not that good. So I started restoration works as soon as I got it from a seller on ebay. I just polished a original acrylic glass due to save a cyclops on the glass, instead of replacing it. The dial is refinished with glossy black, and a case is newly gold-plated by experts. I love this work breathing new life into vintage watches, putting watches back into its most glorious moment. Many of vintage watch collectors are pointing out that restoring work could diminish the value of vintage watches, while I prefer to do this work. 

A green alligator strap has been matched with the watch. The alligator pattern of the band seems unique and descent with its orange-colored stitch. The watch comes with 20 millimeters wide lug and approximately 36 millimeters in diameter.
