시계의 케이스를 주조하는데는 다양한 금속이 사용되어집니다. 가장 보편적인 스틸부터 PVC, 금, 플래티넘, 심지어 나무까지 소재의 종류는 매우 다양한 편인데요. 그 중 금이라는 소재가 시계에 미치는 영향력은 제법 크다고 할 수 있습니다.
가장 보편적인 시계의 컬러는 실버톤과 골드톤입니다. 실버톤의 경우 은이나 스틸이라는 비교적 저렴한 원가의 소재를 사용한 시계를 통해 경험할 수 있습니다. 허나 골드톤의 경우 솔리드 골드가 아니라면, 도금(electroplating)을 통해 경험할 수 있는데, 이는 세월의 흐름 앞에 유한한 지속성을 보이는 한계를 가집니다. 솔리드 골드를 사용한다면 무한한 골드빛을 경험할 수 있겠지만 소재 특성상 시계 가격이 매우 올라가게 되는데요.
단순히 소재 자체의 원가를 놓고 보더라도 대응되는 소재인 스틸과는 그 값어치를 비교하기가 어렵습니다. 여기에 금 세공이라는 특별한 워치메이킹 기술이 추가되며, 세공 중 발생하는 원재료 손실률, 금이라는 소재를 사용한다는 상징적인 의미까지 더해져 실제로 금을 소재한 시계는 단순 원자재 가치 이상의 리테일가가 형성되어 출시되곤합니다. 과거 금 세공 기술이 미약했을 때는 그 가치가 더욱 높게 평가되었습니다.
오늘 소개해드릴 시계는 제니스사의 빈티지 수동 시계입니다. 솔리드 골드 소재로 작지만 중후한 멋을 보입니다. 필자의 경우 실버톤 보다 골드톤의 시계를 매우 선호하는 편입니다. 허나 금액적인 문제로 저의 콜렉션 내 골드톤을 보이는 대부분의 시계는 도금인 것이 슬픈 현실입니다. 세월의 흐름 앞에 본래 모습(스틸)을 보일 수 밖에 없는 운명인 것이지요. 허나 이번에 구매한 시계는 원소 하나하나가 모두 금입니다. 댕강 잘라 단면을 볼 일은 없지만 솔리드 골드라는 타이틀과 함께 손 위에서 느껴지는 묵직함은 소유자만이 느낄 수 있는 기분 좋은 만족감을 불러일으킵니다.
시계의 상태 또한 너무나 만족스럽습니다. 금 시계의 경우 폴리싱 여부는 시계의 가치 형성에 매우 큰 요소로 작용합니다. 금이라는 소재 특성상 바라만 보아도 기스가 생긴다는 우스갯소리가 있을 정도인데요. 구매 후 확인한 결과 폴리싱은 안 되어 있으면서도 너무나 좋은 상태를 유지하고 있었습니다.
'무브먼트 및 케이스백'
러그 안쪽에 음각으로 움푹 새겨진 750 마크의 깊이가 시계의 폴리싱 여부를 말해주고 있습니다. 다이얼 또한 복원 작업이 필요 없을 정도의 완벽한 상태를 보여주는데요. 다이얼 엣지 부분에 세월의 흔적이 약간 보이긴 하지만 이정도면 훌륭한 수준이라 생각됩니다.
시계의 심장으로는 Zenith Cal. 2531 무브먼트가 사용되었습니다. Cal. 2511 무브먼트를 베이스로 하여 개발된 무브먼트이며, 제니스사의 수동 무브먼트는 매우 견고하며 정확합니다. 1964-1967년 사이 양산되었던 19석 무브먼트이며 무려 50시간에 가까운 파워리저브를 자랑합니다.

The Time is Gleaming on My Wrist
I have been collecting vintage watches for about five years. Since I got my first vintage omega watch which was handed down from my father, my vintage watch collection has been increased with my unstoppable passion for timepieces. 'Collecting' is one of the instinctual behaviors for human beings which can lead us happy and more purposeful for our lives. I will keep collecting vintage watches and I know I could be more constructive and motivated by enjoying this hobby. Hobbies make people's lives more worthy and rich.
Today, I am going to introduce Zenith's vintage manual-wound watch which shows amazing condition for its age. The watch comes with 18 karat solid gold case and was manufactured 1960s by Swiss watch company Zenith. The Zenith is considered as one of the collectible and in-demand vintage timepieces for many watch collectors alongside the Omega.
When I had unpacked a box of the watch, I was truly captivated by its classical and neat design. The gleaming solid gold body enhances its luxurious style and looks extremely dignified. Using gold for watches could be a significant role for evaluating the value of watches. Not because of the raw material prices, but because of various aspects such as symbolic reasons for using gold and gold craftsmanship for watchmaking. In this respect, the value of the gold watches are difficult to be evaluated by its raw material prices.
The watch comes with 34mm wide and 10mm thick, which is relatively big size for vintage watches. Sword-shaped hands and a sub-second hand on the golden dial are descent and harmonious with the gold case. Actually, I prefer gold-tone watches rather than silver-tone watches. However, for financial reasons, most watches in my collection are gold-plated. I am happy to be with this lovely solid gold watch from Zenith.

I am fascinated with Zenith's vintage watches recently. There is no doubt that Omega has s strong presence and is in high demand in vintage watch market. However, Zenith's vintage timepieces are also regarded as collectible items for many collectors.
The heart of the watch is almost mint condition for its age. There is no rust and dust on the movement. I can hear the heartbeat sound of the watch when I close it to my ear. It works in great condition and keeps accuracy. The movement is Cal. 2531 which was manufactured between 1964 to 1967.
