과거 유행했던 시계 데코레이션 - 팬시 러그(Fancy lugs)

팬시 러그를 아시는지요? 말그대로 일반적인 형태의 러그에서 벗어난, 데코레이션이 가미되어 보다 유려한 디자인을 띄는 형태의 러그입니다. 대표적으로 노티드(knotted) 러그가 있는데요.  1950-60년대 부로바를 비롯해 론진, 벤러스, 예거, 그루엔 등 상당히 많은 브랜드에서 이와 같은 스타일의 시계를 제작하였습니다. 아마도 당시 디자인 트렌드 중 하나였던 모양입니다. 필자 역시 이베이를 통해 처음 접한 후 오묘한 매력을 뽐내는 디자인에 빠지게 되었는데요. 

고가구의 곡선을 연상케하는 팬시러그의 자태에 그만 혼이 쏙 나가 버렸습니다. 이베이 검색바에 'fancy lug'를 직접 기입하는 노력까지 더하며, 저렴한 모델 몇 점을 구매하게 되었습니다. 그렇게 구매한 녀석들이 바로 이 부로바, 벤러스, 엘진, CROSBY, 4가지 모델입니다. 

이러한 디자인의 특징은 바로 시계의 여성성을 한 껏 끌어올려준다는 것 인데요. 가는 손목 때문인지, 크고 굵직한 디자인으로 이루어진 남성적인 시계 보다는 작고 디테일한 디자인이 살아 있는 시계를 더욱 선호하는 필자입니다. 이러한 취향에 꼭 맞는 데코레이션이 바로 빈티지 라인에서 주로 보이는 팬시 러그이고요. 

4가지 모델 모두 케이스는 GF였던지라, 세월의 흐름에도 제법 금빛을 띄고 있었습니다. 사이즈가 작은 빈티지 시계 특성상, 패딩이 두툼한 시계줄은 그닥 어울리지가 않습니다. 시계에 맞는 얇은 시계줄을 체결해주었습니다.

You could easily find watches with knotted lugs from a number of brands which were manufactured between 1950-1960. From early 1950, this kind of watches are popular for many people, I guess. 

When I got this watch first from an ebay seller, beautiful appearances make my eyes wide with surprise. After receiving the watch, I started to restore the watch. A acrylic glass has been polished by using 'polywatch' and a case of the watch has also been ultrasonically cleaned. Thanks to its gold filled case, the watch remains its gorgeous gold color. Recently, I have been attracted to knotted lugs. I can't get out of the beauty of watches with knotted lugs. It reminds me of antique armchairs.
